Step-by-step guide
Step 1: Preparing the growing tray
Fill the tray with a layer of about 2 cm of substrate . Make sure it is evenly distributed and slightly moist without puddles. This prevents mold and ensures a healthy start.
Step 2: Distribute seeds evenly
Sprinkle the seeds evenly over the surface . Use a small glass or your hand to improve the distribution. Sowing too close together can lead to mold and poor air circulation , so leave some space between the seeds.
Step 3: Watering
Use a plant sprayer to moisten the seeds thoroughly. A watering can will also work, but be careful not to use too much water . Microgreens like moist, but not soaked soil .
Step 4: Cover and let germinate
Cover the tray with a dark lid or a second tray . This will help the seeds germinate faster and ensure that the roots are firmly anchored in the substrate . Place the tray in a warm place (18-22°C) and let the seeds germinate in the dark for 3-4 days .
Step 5: Put in the light
Once the seeds have sprouted and formed small shoots, remove the lid and place the tray in a sunny spot or under a grow light . This will ensure healthy, green growth .
Step 6: Daily care
Microgreens need a little water daily . The best method is to water from below by placing the tray with holes in a closed tray with water . This keeps the leaves dry and prevents mold problems.
Step 7: Harvest and use
After 7-10 days your microgreens are ready to harvest! Cut or trim them just above the substrate with a sharp knife or scissors . Make sure the microgreens stay dry to preserve them as long as possible or use them directly in your dishes .
Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
-
Overwatering → Can lead to mold . Use a plant sprayer or water from the bottom.
-
Not enough light → Provide sufficient sunlight or a grow lamp to prevent long, limp plants.
-
Sowing too densely → This can cause poor air circulation and mold problems . Ensure good distribution of seeds.
