Growing Your Own Sunflower Microgreens – Here's How
These microgreens are perfect for those who love robust and nutritious sprouts. They grow quickly and vigorously – with the right approach, you're guaranteed a bountiful harvest.
Step-by-step growing instructions:
-
Soak seeds (8–12 hours)
Soak the seeds in a container or net with plenty of water. This accelerates germination and ensures even growth. -
Sowing in a growing tray
Use a shallow tray with about 2cm of coconut fibre or fine potting soil.
Sow about 30 grams of seeds per 25×25 cm tray or 55–65 grams per 25×50 cm tray.
Press the seeds firmly and moisten the soil well. -
Germination phase (4–5 days dark)
Cover the tray with a second tray or lid and place weight on top.
The young plants will push up the cover after a few days – then it is time for light. -
Growth phase (light & water)
Place the tray in daylight or under grow lights.
Water daily from below, by placing the inner tray in a closed tray with water.
This prevents mold formation and keeps the stems firm. -
Removing seed husks (around day 7–8)
Gently run your hand over the buds to loosen the seed pods.
Tip: Lightly mist the microgreens with a plant sprayer to make removal easier. -
Harvest (after 10–12 days)
Cut the microgreens just above the roots with clean scissors.
Store them in a sealed container in the refrigerator and use within a few days for maximum freshness.
